Details : Design A Mould for A Chocolate Bar
Pupils design a block and surface pattern which can be machined out and vacuum formed to create a plastic mould. The mould can then have melted chocolate poured into it.

The Unit/Activity Enabled Pupils to: Teaching Strategies? Pupil Outcomes
Use the software to explore ideas, develop and model ideas, evaluate Pupils create simple drawings for chocolate moulds in advance. Teacher shows pupils how to create a tapered block (the bar) with a fresh workplane on top. Pupils explore ideas by creating extruded words, shapes and patterns on the surface of the bar. The importance of tapered edges so that the mould does not get stuck should be emphasised. Other skills that can be taught include champfering edges and rendering the bar to look like a chocolate bar. To evaluate, pupils can print a drawing and check dimensions. They can also transfer the rendered image into Photoshop and create an advertisement for their chocolate. Pupils learn basic skills in extrusion, addition of text and an understanding of how the machining and moulding process works. Extension work could include transfering hand-drawn graphics which have been vectorised in software such as TechSoft 2D Design Tools onto their bar.
Use the software to consider manufacturing issues Quality of mould can be checked in advance using GeoCAM simulation. Mass production can be investigated and discussed. Understanding of quality checks. Ability to change and develop ideas. Understanding how different tools can create different surface effects.
Use the software to explore cross-curricular links With food technology. Pupils can print several isometric views of their product and investigate the use of different ingredients in making a tasty or attractive looking bar of chocolate. They could also be challenged to use the mould to create a more healthy product with the same design. Understanding of physical features of food for decoration. Mixing of ingredients for sensory development. Links with the healthy schools initiative.
Demonstrate CAD capability for assessment purposes Printing of rendered design and annotating / sketching developments. Complexity of designs can be differentiated by outcome. Pupils can be shown how to transfer the rendered image into Photoshop and create an advertisement for their chocolate. Understanding of presentation and graphics skills.
