Brainstorm the theme of Pop Art– what types of images would you expect? Look at existing images of Pop Art inspired designs. Students produce a moodboard using images sourced from internet. Sketch initial ideas for Pencil Case design from moodboard images to give them a starting point when they begin on SpeedStep. Patterns were produced using ProSketch use resizing, mirroring and repeating images. Lettering could be added in the same way onto the Pencil Case. Remember to flip the whole image if lettering is used. Transfer into Propaint and using the colour palate apply the colour required using paint application and fill tools. Now having coloured the image print your design onto transfer paper and, using a heat press, transferred onto the blank A4 calico piece of fabric which is the basis for the Pencil Case. Remind students not to press item.
Once completed we machine the zip in place. Undoing the zip correct sides facing machined the side seams. Then pulled through to correct side. Now ready for use. Could extend task by lining with PVC could also be used for make up bag.
Explore manufacturing technique for printing natural fabrics. |
Moodboard of patterns, lettering and colours that fit “Pop Art ” theme. Initial sketched ideas to experiment with how to incorporate some of the images from their moodboards. Files to show one or more design ideas for a Pencil Case (depending on time). Printed version of design. Printed and made up Pencil Case student feel satisfied!
Students choose which software package to use and become confident with a variety of CAD techniques through motif manipulation and colourways. Understand the importance of quick sampling within the industry.
Use digital techniques learnt in Art. Discuss environmentally friendly issues of sublimation printing.
All will produce a moodboard, sheet of initial ideas, printed final idea and a finished Pencil Case. |
| Use the software to consider manufacturing issues |
Understand workings of CAD/ CAM designing relevance to manufacturer. Duplication and accuracy. Global Industrial practice about using CAD for developing design ideas. |
|
| Use the software to explore cross-curricular links |
Environmental implications of sublimation printing.

More able will understand how designs can be built up in layers and will have demonstrated this by using a background and merging other images on top successfully. They will have stuck to the theme. Some will get sidetracked by the different effects that can be achieved and forget about the theme! Less able will have a plain background with an image on top. |
