Title : John Lewis Leicester Radio
Details of Design Style: Inspired by the 2008 John Lewis Leicester building, the striking facade of which draws upon a fabric design from1803 that the architects found while sifting through the John Lewis textile archive in Carlisle. The double layer of hundreds of mirrored swirls from the main focus, with a series of contrasting geometric windows that line the base of the building.
Software : Pro/ENGINEER
Comments on methods used: The complexity of this design rested on the multiple components required to recreate the effect of the mirrored swirls. I wanted to recreate the transparent layers of the building, with the swirls concealed behind a seamless wall of transparent plastic, whilst concealing the internal circuitry of the radio. To this end, I have built the design around a central box casing which has a series of posts to which the rest of the casing can be attached, leaving a void between the interior walls and the exterior mirrored walls.

The majority of the design uses a series of sketches and extrudes, both removing and adding material. The visual complexity of the separate components meant that correctly dimensioning and lining up features on different parts was crucial. I experimented with using the 'shell' feature when drawing the front panel to which the speakers and dials are inset, but found that in the end a series of extrusions, from both sides of the part produced the most satisfactory outcome. Throughout the process I used both the 'round' and 'chamfer' tools, as well as the 'revolve' tool when creating the dials, and the basic screw forms to show where it would be held together.
